The excitement of opening the kiln and seeing new creations for the first time; giving birth to a panel, bowl, platter, free standing piece, or jewellery – all started life as an idea, inspired by nature, the world around us, other artisans, our everyday lives… drawn up as a design and made by fusing cut glass and granular glass (frits) – it’s a wonderful moment, as it is for my students when they see their first ever creations fused and slumped. Some students come to make pieces they can take home with pride and keep, or give as gifts, others come before setting up their own workshops and some have gone on to do full time courses working with glass. Students come from all walks of life and from all over the country, and abroad.
Students may choose from a large selection of Bullseye Glass and frit (granular glass) to see their own designs incorporated in glass bowls, platters and panels they design and make themselves. The course explores health and safety, design, moulds, glass cutting, using frit, and the warm glass method of fusing and slumping. All tools and a booklet covering all aspects of the course are provided. After course back-up including use of kiln is offered. This is an intensive 2 day course.
This really is fascinating glass, having a surface that reflects the light of one colour and transmits light of other colours – Students may choose from a vast range of dichroic glass for the course to make wonderful pendants, brooches, cufflinks, rings and earrings. It’s tremendously rewarding to see others produce wonderful work from my studio. A student visited the Hockney exhibition and she made a wonderful 10 piece desert set inspired by his work – I must admit I wish I’d made them! So rewarding to see her pleasure and pride.

Every morning I’m welcomed by a stream of colours - dancing reflections beaming through my living room from a modest stained glass panel - enough in itself, also a starting point for this versatile material which by the use of the warm glass method of kiln fusing and slumping can be changed in shape, colour, and texture.
